Unlike a traditional automatic transmission, which relies on planetary gearsets to get the job done, Nissan’s CVT uses a steel belt and a set of adjustable pulleys. The Civic coupe managed 0.82 g of lateral grip, a modest number but better than that Elantra by 0.04 g. They work well, but it’s generally not as good as an old-fashioned clutch and shifter. All internal combustion-powered cars need a transmission to manipulate rotational force from the engine and transfer that force to the drive wheels. Shod with the EX-L’s upsized 215/45-17 all-season tires, the coupe stopped from 70 mph in a tidy 169 feet, 13 shorter than a Hyundai Elantra coupe. A CVT, or Continuously Variable Transmission, is a type of automatic transmission that constantly and seamlessly shifts through an unlimited number of gear. CVTs often offer better fuel economy as a result, especially when driving in the city. This means that no matter what the engine speed it, it is always performing at its peak efficiency. The car’s brake pedal has crisp response and aggressive bite. One of the advantages of a CVT is its ability to continuously change its gear ratio. With the shifter in Drive, pressing a paddle provides control for a few seconds before the CVT takes over again put the shifter in Sport, and your paddle press is gospel until you say so-or you choose a gear that would blow the four-cylinder sky high or cause it to bog.Īlthough the 143-hp, 1.8-liter four and 8.6-second 0-to-60 run fall far short of high performance, the fact that the coupe is 1.5 inches shorter and squattier than the Civic sedan helps it at least seem more vivacious. In addition to the obvious benefits of this type of transmission, it still exists some disadvantages compared to other automatic transmissions. They’re handy for, say, downshifting a couple of “gears” when entering a sharp, downhill sweeper. Is a CVT transmission good Our answer is Yes. Moreover, certain engines’ high torque output may be too much for CVTs to manage. If they do break down, however, repairs might be costly. If a driver wishes to further minimize the disconnect between road speed and engine speed, all CVT Civic coupes have steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles to control seven fixed ratios. In general, CVT transmissions are dependable. Rather, engine speed initially rises to just under 4000 rpm and climbs proportionally with road speed, topping out at 7400. At wide-open throttle, the engine doesn’t swing to redline and stay there until you lift, as is typical with most CVTs. Toyota CVT transmission reliability is quite high because it helps prolong the life of vehicles if well maintained. Honda has gone its own way with CVTs, and we’ve rated its stepless automatics better than most others. HIGHS: Good fuel economy, crisp braking, good body control, paddle shifters.
